St Andrew's Heart Institute was established in 1995 as a joint activity between private cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and St Andrew's Hospital, to establish a comprehensive cardiac service unit and routinely conduct heart surgery and other complex cardiac procedures. St Andrews Hospital is one of Australia’s foremost healthcare establishments, with a rich history, reputation for excellence, vibrant intellectual life, and state-of-the-art technology.
This environment provides an extraodinarily rich opportunity for the Medical Institute to focus on refining the methodologies behind the clinical practice that has resulted in the hospital's world class patient outcomes. The St Andrew's Medical Institute retains and builds on the strengths of the Heart Institute – that is, our members are developing leading-edge techniques and innovations to underpin delivery of superior patient outcomes, not just in heart health but in all of the hospital’s areas of clinical expertise. The Institute's focus is on applied research and education, with particular emphasis on the enhancement of patient outcomes, and it has conducted a range of research activities into cardiovascular, neurosurgical, and other disease, producing practical tools and programs for patients.
