St Andrews welcomes bonafide enquiries abouth the specific results of the annual Cardiac Audit.
Orthopaedics St Andrew's orthopaedic service has developed an audit forum that reviews morbidity and mortality statistics. The review covers the top 10 orthopaedic Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) by separations, compares these DRGs based on previous audits, reviews major joint procedure statistics, and reviews hospital activity versus orthopaedic activity statistics. It also breaks down clinical indicator statistics to demonstrate the service's performance in relation to unplanned readmissions, unplanned returns to the operating theatre, and mortality. Clinical Outcomes for Excellence While basic science research is essential and is the province of many other institutes, St Andrew's Medical Institute has a very different niche in healthcare. St Andrew’s Medical Institute is the only one of its kind in Queensland and one of only a handful in Australia which focuses on advances in clinical practice & technology rather than on basic science. In doing so, it aims to optimise medical care by researching the best possible use of treatments and methods, improved outcomes for patients, and with huge potential savings both in human and financial costs. To achieve this aim, the Institute has three integrated areas of focus relating to outcomes research: auditing of treatment results and patient experience, research into developing and implementing evidence based standards, and education to enable healthcare practitioners to improve outcomes for patients. Clinical outcomes research is becoming popular in the United States and Canada, and there is a growing recognition in other parts of the world of its need. But it is not simple, in that sophisticated databases are required, as is close attention to detail and recording in clinical work.
The St Andrew’s Medical Institute enables clinicians to engage in research in a very practical sense. read more
